Tahawwur Rana placed on ‘suicide watch’ in high-security NIA cell

The NIA told a special court that it believes Rana has plans to carry out similar large-scale strikes in other Indian cities, and that he was subjected to a series of interrogations aimed at revealing the “deeper layers of the conspiracy.”

Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana with NIA officials upon his arrival at the IGI Airport.

After a Delhi court awarded the anti-terror agency an 18-day custody order, Tahawwur Rana, the architect of the 26/11 Mumbai Terror attack, who was extradited to India earlier this week, has been placed under “suicide watch” in a highly guarded cell at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters.

In order to learn the “deeper layers of the conspiracy,” 64-year-old Rana was subjected to a lengthy interrogation. The NIA informed a special court that it believes he has plans to carry out similar large-scale strikes in other Indian cities. Rana is currently being watched by CCTV and people around-the-clock.

“Rana has been detained in a ground-floor, 14×14 cell. In order to prevent him from hurting himself, he will only be permitted to write using a soft-tip pen,” a source told TOI.

Near the NIA headquarters on Lodhi Road, where Rana is now being held, there is multi-layered security. In addition to Rana’s affiliation with the ISI, namely with his friend David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, the investigative agency’s questioning of him is anticipated to centre on his involvement with sleeper cells in India.

According to sources, Headley is suspected of recruiting sleeper cells in Pushkar, Rajasthan; Delhi; Goa; and other locations throughout the nation.
